Sexual Trauma Healing

“Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence.”

Dr. Peter Levine

The impact of sexual trauma is profound, leaving lasting imprints on both the brain and body as they work to keep you safe. If you’re reading this, it means you’ve survived, and I want to acknowledge the incredible strength it took to get here. Your body’s automatic survival mode kicked in, responding unconsciously to help you endure an experience that no one should ever have to face.

Yet, because of the overwhelming nature of trauma, it can be difficult to feel that the danger has truly passed. The survival responses that protected you in the moment—whether by fleeing, fighting, or shutting down—may now be chronically activated. This can lead to long-term feelings of alarm, tendencies to withdraw or shut down under stress, and a deep sense of vulnerability and exhaustion. These responses, while challenging, make perfect sense given what you’ve been through; they are part of your brain and body’s efforts to keep you safe.

Common symptoms of sexual trauma may include:

  • Hypervigilance and fear: Feeling constantly on edge or in danger.
  • Numbness or disconnection: A sense of being detached from your body or emotions.
  • Avoidance: Steering clear of reminders or feelings related to the trauma.
  • Memory loss and difficulty concentrating: Struggling to focus or recall certain events.
  • Flashbacks and nightmares: Reliving the trauma through vivid, distressing memories.
  • Panic attacks: Sudden, overwhelming feelings of terror.
  • Difficulty trusting others: Feeling unsafe and unable to rely on others.
  • Shame and guilt: Carrying a heavy burden of self-blame.

The aftermath of sexual trauma is unique to each individual, shaped by factors such as the nature of the trauma, your age when it occurred, and the support you received—or didn’t receive—afterward. Understanding this, I approach each person’s healing journey with the utmost care, recognizing that your needs are as unique as your experiences.

I am deeply committed to helping individuals in Missoula, Montana, California, and beyond, heal from the complex wounds of sexual trauma. I am trained in a variety of trauma-focused modalities, including EMDR and NARM, and we will work together to identify the approaches that best suit your unique needs, experiences, and preferences. Here’s what you can expect when working with me:

  • Choice: During traumatic experiences, your sense of agency is often taken away. In our work together, I will always honor your choices, including when and if you’re ready to address any part of the trauma. You are in control of your healing process.
  • Safety: Reorienting your brain and body to the present is crucial for healing. Your safety will always be my top priority. If there are ongoing threats to your safety, that’s where we’ll start.
  • Empowerment: You are the expert on yourself and your healing journey. My role is to help you reconnect with your inherent truth and power, guiding you as you reclaim your sense of self.
  • Connection: No one should have to navigate the aftermath of trauma alone. I strive to be a warm, supportive presence for you and to help you build connections—with yourself and with others who can support your healing.
